Professor Brian Selby Hartley, M.A., Ph. D., F.R.S

Professor Hartley was educated at Queen’s College, Cambridge (B.A.) and the University of Leeds (Ph.D.). He is a founder member of the world-famous Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he worked for 25 years in Fred Sanger’s (twice a Nobel Laureate) group. He is a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1974 he succeeded Prof. Ernst Chain (Nobel Laureate) as the Head of Biochemistry at Imperial College, London.
In 1980, Professor Hartley was co-author of the “Spinks Report” that coined and defined the term “Biotechnology” and in the same year, he became Director of the Centre for Biotechnology at Imperial College, London, with responsibility for its large fermentation pilot plant. He has published more than 200 papers. Among his many honours are: PHLS David Henderson Memorial Medal; Fellow, Institute of Biology; Medal “Cinquantenaire de la Societé de Chimie Biologique”; Fellow of the Royal Society and British Drug Houses Medal for Analytical Biochemistry. He has commercial experience as a founder member and Director of Biogen Inc., one of the first Biotechnology companies in the world and as co-founder, Chairman and Research Director of Agrol Limited.
